I was there a few times August to October 2023. There were 1-4 patients while I was there. You see a medical doctor everyday, adolescent every weekday, psychologist a few times a week to everyday 1 on 1, psychiatry as needed, dietitian a couple times a week, school teacher every weekday, and expressive therapies every couple of days. The social worker mostly works with your care taker, but they will also talk to you sometimes. You can get physical therapy at a certain point which is everyday. There aren’t any groups, but you can request to see the psychologist whenever. She will come within 1-2 hours or more depending on the timing. There is also music therapy once a week and dance/idk therapy once a week. Everyone is on bed rest. You get wheeled around in wheelchairs and there are bed alarms. There is a range of food. They try to respect preferences. You get 30 minutes for meals with 15 minutes for supplement and 15 minutes for snacks and 15 minutes for supplement. They supplement whatever you don’t eat. They do the exact amount. If you don’t finish it they place an ng tube and pull it after. Depending on the situation they might leave one in. There is also a required amount of water and Gatorade everyday and if that is not finished place a tube and pull it. Everyone eats as a group with a nurse typically. Every weekday the psychologist eats breakfast with the patients. After each meal and snack there is a 30 minute sit time in the room. You can bring games, a book, do school work, there are a lot of options. There is a schoolroom and 3 teachers. You go for 1.5 hours every weekday. If you need extra time you can get it, at least most of the time. There are no electronics outside of school and the tv. The average day you have orthostatics, weights, and a pee sample at 5ish. You go back to bed. 7:30 the day nurse comes in with the night nurse and you get meds. 8 is breakfast. After that the doctors round. School is from 9:30 to 11 I think. Don’t quote me on that. Lunch is at 12. PM snack is at 2:30. Dinner is at 5. HS snack is at 8. During the day you see all of the doctors, therapists, etc. In your free time you can watch tv, have visitors, read, I got really into diamond art while I was there. They have a giant binder of dvds with movies to watch. They have stuff for little kids of course but also stuff that’s pg-13 for teens that I really enjoyed. The average stay is 1-2 weeks. That is just an average. It can be very different depending on your situation. If you are waiting on a residential placement they will typically send you home. They really set you up to succeed at home. Each plan is personalized to each patient’s needs. All of the staff there are amazing. You can tell that they really love what they do. I definitely recommend Cardinal Glennon if you need medical stabilization.
Thank you so much for posting, this is extremely helpful!
~~When were you there:
2x (April 2014, October/November 2015)
~~How many patients on average?
Varies! Anywhere between 1-6 ED patients while I was there
~~Does it treat both males and females? If so, is treatment separate or combined.
Yes. Combined.
~~How often do you see a medical doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, nutritionist…?
Doctor – every weekday, psychiatrist/psychologist – almost every weekday, nutritionist/dietitan – every few days, social worker – as needed, child life specialist – as needed, physical therapy – once a day if cleared by doctor
~~Describe the average day:
6 am weights, urine sample, vitals 6:30 am blood labs, 7 am meds, vitamins, vitals, meet day nurse, 8 am breakfast, 9:30-11 am doctors, 10 am snack (if needed) etc visit, noon lunch, 2 pm snack, 5 pm dinner, 8 pm snack (Throughout the day vitals are done multiple times, other staff visit {dietitian, psychologist, psychiatrist, child life, physical therapy, etc} Between meals you can watch movies, have visitors, play cards, color watch TV etc
~~What were meals like?
Main meals = 30 minutes to finish with 1 hour sit time outside the nurses station afterwards
Snacks = 15 min to finish with 30 min sit time
Meals are served in the conference room on the floor, you eat with the other ED patients and a nurse of CNA.
Some staff tried to stop behaviors, some didn’t. Meals could be very awkward or very fun it varied on the patients and staff at the time.
~~What sorts of food were available or served?
All foods. Food is prepared in the hospital’s cafeteria then sent up to the floor (Food is good though!) The dietitian will work with your dislikes or allergies as it is a medical hospital so they have all sorts of food. You don’t choose your meals though, the dietitian makes them.
~~Did they supplement? How did that system work?
YES. Meals = 2 ensures Snacks = 1 ensure. You choose the flavor. If you don’t finish the supplement in time (15 min) or refuse then you’re tubed.
NOTE: THEY REMOVE THE NG TUBE AFTER EVERY FEED as an incentive to get ED patients to eat, though they do use an infant size tube to decrease irritation.
~~What privelages are allowed?
Wheel chair rides once a day if in wheel chair, if you can walk then I think you get a 10 minute walk around the floor a day? (I was never allowed to so I can’t say) If you have been complying with your meal plan you can go to warner’s corner (a part of the hospital with games etc for patients)
~~Does it work on a level system?
No, it’s a medical hospital
~~What did you like the most?
The nurses and CNA’s were amazing and caring.
~~What did you like the least?
Reinserting the NG tube every time I needed a feed, sometimes the doctors, I wish there would have been a group for all the ED patients to go to cause it can be lonely and boring
~~Would you recommend this program?
For medical stabilization
~~Do you get to know your weight?
No, your parents don’t get to know it either
~~What was the average length of stay?
3 weeks, but you could be there much shorter, it depended on your medical stability
~~What was the average age range?
Teens/tweens
~~What kind of aftercare do they provide? Do they help you set up an OP treatment team?
They prepare an OP team if not already established or refer you to resi if needed/if insurance will cover it. The school teacher there helps you prepare for school which is SO helpful!
