In early 2024 Fairhaven shut down suddenly and without warning, leaving patients and staff with nowhere to go. Before closing, Fairhaven had been acquired by UnitedHealth Group and Optum. Optum UnitedHealth purchased Fairhaven in 2022, when it bought a company called Refresh Mental Health from a private equity firm called Kelso & Co. Refresh had operated a network of more than 300 mental health, substance abuse and eating disorder centers.  Shortly after acquiring Fairhaven, Optum UnitedHealth closed all of the in-person eating disorder treatment centers it owned. The eating disorder treatment centers Optum closed included Fairhaven Treatment Center in Tennessee as well as Cielo House in California and Turning Tides Eating Disorder Treatment Center in Florida.
