Rock Recovery is a nonprofit outpatient eating disorder treatment program based in Arlington, Virginia. They were founded in 2009 and their goal is to making life-saving outpatient eating disorder therapy and support more accessible and affordable for all.
Rock Recovery treats teens and adults (ages 14+) who are residents of DC, MD, or VA. It offers both in-person and virtual eating disorder therapy services, including meal support, body image groups, faith-based groups, and individual therapy. It also offers virtual faith-based support groups that are open to participants nationwide. All programs are offered at sliding scale rates, but don’t take insurance. They also offer referral services and have a free downloadable referral guide for people in DC/MD/VA who are trying to put together a treatment team.

I went here for 3 weekly adult groups, 2 of which included meal support. They do several virtual groups to reach people throughout VA, MD, DC who can’t make it to the Arlington location. They are great about collaborating with individual therapists and dieticians. They typically require you are seeing a therapist / dieticians to participate in groups. They do accept some insurance for groups and offer a sliding scale. I know their goal is to not turn anyone away. It is also very accessible for people who do not want faith-based services to be part of their recovery but they do offer a faith-based support group. It is a good bridge for people who need more support but not quite IOP. I ended up needing a HLOC but will go back to Rock when I step down to outpatient.
I don’t want to say too much since it’d probably identify me and I’m still with them and plan on staying for the foreseeable future, but long story short I generally recommend them. I was a little confused at first as to whether they are Christian based or not, but I think I figured it out. They are Christian-affiliated as an organization but they offer two separate types of groups: group therapy that is NOT faith based (I don’t think religion has been mentioned a single time in the several months I’ve been in the group) either in person or virtual (for VA and MD residents), and separate virtual faith-based support groups that are for anywhere. I’ve only done the non-faith based group.
The full price for the therapy group is very expensive and they don’t take insurance, but they can provide a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement and they offer a sliding scale. I found the sliding scale application to be painless and my rate is a slight stretch but doable. It seems like they care about making it affordable for people. I believe they also offer individual therapy. This isn’t really a treatment center exactly, it’s more like an outpatient practice with groups. One of the groups they offer is similar to one night of IOP with a supported meal and a group after. I find the groups to be more like a group at a treatment center than most free virtual groups. They tend to have time for open processing and time to discuss a set topic.
I would suggest them for someone who is outpatient and doing well but wants to add something on for extra support, mainly. However those of us in VA who don’t live in NoVA/Richmond/Hampton Roads have such limited options for the PHP/IOP level of care now, as the only virtual provider anymore seems to be Within. If you don’t have insurance with tons of out of network benefits or the cash to pay out of pocket this may be the closest you can get to virtual IOP. Comment if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to answer!
